VERIFIED LUXURY
We verify luxury. Our highly trained inspectors visit every property we rate, evaluating based on up to 900 objective criteria. Our hotel stays span a minimum of two nights.
We pay our own way. No one can buy a rating; all ratings are earned through our objective inspection process.
Our global team of inspectors are anonymous at all times, so they have the same experience as a typical guest.
While we inspect both service and facility, our Star Rating system emphasizes service because your experience at a hotel, restaurant or spa goes beyond looks — how it makes you feel is what you will remember most.
We started in1958 as Mobil Travel Guide, and we created the original Five-Star rating system for hospitality.
Five-Star
These are outstanding, often iconic properties with virtually flawless service and amazing facilities.
Four-Star
These are exceptional properties, offering high levels of service and quality of facility to match.
Recommended
These are excellent properties with consistently good service and facilities.

Our Inspector's Highlights
- Providence is a beautiful establishment located at the corner of Melrose and Cole Avenue in Hollywood. The exterior boasts a noticeably modern design with concrete walls, modest greenery and other intriguing architectural features such as stone accents and thin wooden panels concealing portions of the structure.
- Dinner at Providence is the restaurant's specialty, with prix fixe tasting menus ranging from five to nine courses.
- The service at this Four-Star restaurant is sprinkled with signature amuses including spherical shots filled with vodka and grapefruit juice, and crispy salmon skin served with a smoked trout mousse seasoned with chives and garlic.
- Lunch at Los Angeles' Providence is a leisurely affair. Chef Michael Cimarusti uses this time to try out his new ideas, so the menu is often more experimental.
Things to Know
- The L.A. restaurant is open for dinner Monday through Friday from 6 to 10 p.m., Saturday from 5:30 to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 5:30 to 9 p.m.
- Lunch provides a lovely start to the weekend since it's only offered Friday from noon to 2 p.m. Lunch on Friday afternoon is less formal, meaning designer jeans and a stylish shirt or blouse is appropriate.
- The dress code at Providence is considered casual elegant or business casual, but the vibe is more relaxed than most traditional fine dining restaurants — collared shirts and slacks for men and dresses or pants for women will suffice.
- Plan to stay for two hours or more, watching as course after course is gracefully presented at each table around you.
- To secure a coveted table at Providence, you can either call the restaurant directly at 323-460-4170 or book online through their website.
The Food
- Signature favorites include black bass with peppers, blood sausage and pickled celery; and salt-roasted Santa Barbara prawns with rosemary, lemon and virgin olive oil.
- Start with something light at lunchtime, such as Hirame sashimi served with pink grapefruit and cucumber, followed by the Alaskan halibut with artichokes braised in white wine, carrots, pearl onions, and parsley- jalapeño pistou.
- Finish off your meal with a refreshing selection of ice cream and sorbets such as huckleberry, carrot and toasted milk.
The Design
- The building is dimly lit from the outside, creating an inviting allure that sets the proper tone for the evening. Once you arrive at the entrance, a frosted glass door gives way to a warm, sophisticated interior.
- The dining area at Providence is intimate and elegant, outfitted with subtle aquatic accents. The walls are painted in warm earth tones and whimsically decorated with clusters of white porcelain seashells.
- The room features an elevated ceiling with artistic light fixtures and high windows, providing plenty of natural light by day and the perfect mood lighting by night.
- Coral-like centerpieces complete the décor, while the high, white leather booths create a sleek and comfortable ambiance.
