Blantyre

A Gilded Age beauty in the Berkshires
VERIFIED LUXURY

Gloriously restored and carefully updated in 2018, this Tudor-style mansion built in 1902 is a stunning throwback to another time. Set on 110 meticulously manicured acres, Blantyre feels more like the setting for The Great Gatsby or an Agatha Christie novel than a hotel.

With wood paneling, antique furnishings, fresh flowers, a pianist playing every evening in the Music Room, a full-service spa, the exclusive Dom Pérignon Champagne Salon and a host of other amenities, this Berkshires retreat is a refined gem.

Outdoor activities include croquet and tennis in the summer and ice skating and sleigh rides in the winter. The staff and excellent concierge can arrange anything else you might want to do in the area, from hot-air balloon rides to tickets to musical festivals, though it is more than tempting to stay put and indulge in your opulent surroundings.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Staff is absolutely top-notch, from greeting you with a glass of sparkling wine at check-in (which takes place in the lovely Main Hall rather than a desk) to being on hand to offer tips about what to do in the area or to chat about the mansion’s history.
  • The Berkshires is a cultural haven with music, theaters, museums and other attractions close by, such as Tanglewood, the Norman Rockwell Museum and The Mount, the home of author Edith Wharton.
  • Dine at either the casual yet elegant Bistro or the more formal Conservatory. Decorated with Murano chandeliers, the French-inspired fine-dining room features dishes prepared with local ingredients by chef Jeremy Berlin, formerly of Tuthill House at the Mill in New York.
  • A stay at this elegant resort includes lots of complimentary extras, such as afternoon refreshments, wine tastings, culinary arts classes, Gilded Age seminars and guided hikes.
  • To explore the Massachusetts countryside in style, borrow one of the resort’s two house BMWs.

Things to Know

  • This is a property that instills fierce loyalty with its repeat guests. You’ll want to make reservations early on, especially around the holidays.
  • La Cave, the delightful speakeasy-like champagne bar in the basement, has limited hours and is typically open only on weekend nights.
  • Book spa treatments well in advance to avoid disappointment. The intimate facility has just four treatment rooms and a Thermal Suite.
  • There’s a heated outdoor pool just outside Spa by Blantyre, which is available to all guests and is generally open from May through October, depending on the weather.

The Rooms

  • Choose among 23 rooms, including eight in the main Manor House, 11 in the Carriage House (where the spa is located) and four cozy cottages.
  • Amenities include Molton Brown bath products, Sangean radios and iPads. Most accommodations have soaking tubs and some feature fireplaces.
  • The cottages all come with De’Longhi Eletta espresso and cappuccino machines, which are also found in the lobbies of the Main House and the Carriage House, if you need a caffeine fix.
  • The Riverview Cottage was designed with help from high-end home design company Serena & Lily and has a bright, airy vibe. The stylish space offers custom-made bedding, woven rattan furniture, chic patterned wallpaper, a sitting room with a fireplace and a patio.

The Restaurants

  • The Bistro serves classic French dishes, such as beef tartare and moules frites, using locally sourced ingredients in an elegant, romantic setting. The warm and welcoming room features a custom-designed bar from Milan and a large picturesque fireplace.
  • The Conservatory is a stunning setting for a fine-dining experience, with a five-course tasting menu that might offer anything from Menemsha lobster to venison loin that can be paired with wines from Blantyre’s vast collection of more than 10,000 bottles. There’s a spectacular wine-by-the-glass list, too, including selections from the Dom Pérignon menu.
  • The first Dom Pérignon-inspired salon in North America makes its home at Blantyre, with gorgeous outdoor and indoor spaces respectively called The Cloister and La Cave. The menu carries exclusive specialty selections, including Vintage Trinity, Dom Pérignon 2006, P2 Vintage 2000 and Rosé 2005.
  • Pair your champagne with caviar and other small appetizers from a creative Tin to Table menu. For a playful approach to luxury, try the salon’s tater tots and caviar offerings served with a tangy lemon-chive crème fraîche.
