Sanderling Resort

A coastal chic retreat
VERIFIED LUXURY
A former hunting lodge turned beach resort, Sanderling Resort is nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Currituck Sound, just steps from the beach, in North Carolina’s Outer Banks. With 120 rooms and five large beach houses, Sanderling can accommodate couples’ getaways, family reunions and even wedding parties. Start your day with an oceanfront sunrise yoga class and end sipping a cocktail as you watch the sun set over the sound.

The Forbes Travel Guide Recommended hotel boasts three restaurants — from a poolside sandbar to casual dining spot — a saltwater tranquility pool (adults only), family pool, as well as hot tubs and fire pits right on the property.

Kitty Hawk Kites has a beach kiosk on the property where adventurous guests can take kayaking tours, as well as paddle-boarding, surfing and kiteboarding lessons. For relaxation, make an appointment at the Spa at Sanderling for exfoliating body treatments, soothing massages and restorative facials.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • With miles of sandy beaches along the Atlantic Ocean, Sanderling Resort is located in Duck, North Carolina, one of the northernmost towns on the Outer Banks’ chain of islands.
  • Spend your days with a variety of outdoor activities, such as paddleboarding, sunrise yoga, biking, and swimming in its saltwater pools and ocean.
  • Or if relaxation is your main goal, spend your time basking in the sun, building sandcastles and enjoying the resort’s spa.
  • The Forbes Travel Guide Recommended hotel has views of both the ocean and Currituck Sound, so you can enjoy both sunrise and sunset.
  • The coastal chic décor is reminiscent of Key West or Nantucket with its calming blues, grays and whites and The Sanderling’s signature pop of color, orange.
Things to Know
  • The best time to go to Sanderling Resort depends on whether you want to visit during peak season or not. Sanderling Resort’s busiest time is from July through Labor Day in September, with guests ranging from families with kids to small wedding groups staying at the resort.
  • The Forbes Travel Guide Recommended hotel has a 98 percent occupancy rate during the month of August, making it the property’s most popular time for guests to visit. September and October are favorable months for empty nesters.
  • In September, the water is still warm and in October, there is less humidity and a chill in the air. The resort offers reduced accommodation rates during September and October, which is also a boon during this quiet time. The hotel also is typically booked throughout May and June on the weekends.
The Rooms
  • Decorated with a coastal chic vibe — pale, calming blues and warm wood tones — the rooms at Sanderling Resort are elegant, inviting and comfortable.
  • All rooms at the resort have balconies with locally made chairs from Nags Head Hammocks for you to relax in and enjoy the surrounding beauty (request oceanside accommodations for the best view).
  • With 95 rooms in the resort, ranging from deluxe rooms to premium suites, and five sprawling beach houses, the Forbes Travel Guide Recommended hotel offers an array of accommodations for visitors.
  • From the complimentary s’mores kit to the turndown service, the Outer Banks hotel is all about making the details count.
The Restaurants
  • The resort’s restaurant, Kimball’s Kitchen, which is located across the street on the sound, serves dinner Tuesday through Saturday from May through October, and offers steak, seafood, a raw bar and an extensive wine menu.
  • Housed in a lifesaving station built in 1896, the Lifesaving Station and its upstairs bar, No. 5, is a more casual restaurant and bar compared to Kimball's Kitchen.
  • The restaurant serves three meals per day, every day, and has a focus on southern coastal cuisine and sustainable, organic produce.
  • The Sandbar, located near the two saltwater pools and beach, offers poolside delivery and serves lunch — the staff also mixes up refreshing cocktails and fruit smoothies.
  • The Beach House Bar, located in the lobby of the Forbes Travel Guide Recommended hotel, serves coffee and homemade pastries for breakfast and cocktails and snacks throughout the day.
