Mandapa Spa

A riverside luxury spa in Bali
VERIFIED LUXURY
Nestled among Bali’s tiered rice paddies and flowing Ayung River, Mandapa Spa aims to help you feel at peace both in body and in mind. The word "mandapa" means temple, and you can go in search of your inner sanctum at the actual Balinese temple near the spa, which is within the resort Mandapa, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve.

Balinese masters blend techniques like reflexology and reiki, along with energy and body work to take you to another level of relaxation. Healing hands, massage treatments, and yoga and meditation programs are offered at this beautiful riverside spa that will have you floating in no time.

Mandapa has an impressive list of spa services, including specialty treatments for men and for teens, too. While undergoing a treatment, listen to the river and the birds and let relaxation come effortlessly.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • Eight private treatment rooms open onto balconies at the river's edge — here, services begin with a flower-infused foot bathing ritual.
  • The Royal Spice Ceremony is a 150-minute treatment, which dates back to the 17th century. The service was inspired by the Indonesian royal wedding ritual and starts with a warming body exfoliation and is followed by a seven-flower cleansing ritual and a four-hand synchronized massage. You’ll need to block off the afternoon to enjoy this royal feast for the senses.
  • Yoga and meditation sessions are guided by the well-known instructor Ketut Bandiastra. Yoga is complimentary every day at sunrise and sunset; if it’s a full moon or a new moon, classes are adjusted to embrace the energy and flowing forces of these moon cycles.
  • Five masters have been selected to practice here, including Pak Tjok, a member of the royal family; yoga guru Ketut Bandiastra, son of a Balinese priest; Ketut Mursi, a healer with extraordinary reflexology knowledge and a gifted blind masseuse; a well-known reiki master, I Made Warmana; and last but not least, Ni Ketut Bunterini, a senior therapist with more than 20 years experience and known locally as “magic hands.”
Things to Know
  • Balinese healing traditions have been in existence for centuries. Mandapa offers services to help you tap into the region’s healing expertise. Choose from the comprehensive Mandapa Massage Menu or the Panca Indera Program, which focuses on authentic Balinese healers performing age-old rituals.
  • The treatments at Mandapa embrace the five senses, which allow all of them to be activated during a service. One massage technique combines Javanese massage with Balinese-style massage — expect long strokes that release tension held in muscles.
  • If you're looking to get your heart pumping with more cardio-centric workout, there is a 24-hour fitness center situated adjacent to the spa.
The Treatments
  • The Padi Massage (as in rice padi, which surround the resort) is both nourishing and hydrating. You are wrapped in a warm poultice of rice with a blend of indigenous herbs aiming to activate circulation and reduce fatigue.
  • Facials start with an in-depth consultation that determines the appropriate products used in your treatment, which is customized every step of the way. Using a blend of ESPA skincare products along with local natural plant extracts, facials — from anti-aging to deeply hydrating — deliver serious results.
  • Couples can indulge in ceremonies created for two in a spa suite. Combining local Balinese therapies with powerful healing herbs and natural ingredients straight from the jungle, guests spend 150 minutes with a loved one experiencing body treatments, plus a steam shower and an invigorating plunge pool dip — all this with an unobstructed view of the river from a private terrace.
  • The Bali spa provides a selection of five men’s services, including the Hero 120-minute treatment targeting back, face and a scalp that can be had with or without hot river stones.
  • A spa menu for teens offers aromatherapy massages with gentle strokes, fancy feet options and party nails.
The Facilities
  • The secluded temple near the Ubud spa is an ideal place to spend time before or after a treatment. Meditate to the gentle sounds of the flowing river and take in the unique Balinese landscape.
  • Yoga and meditation classes are held in the stunning open-air yoga pavilion overlooking the river and beyond. The temple is nearby if you prefer to practice there instead.
  • Wellness options you’d expect at a Western spa are common place here, too —visit the vitality pool with water massage jets, a sauna, steam room, ice fountain and experience showers. There’s a state-of-the-art fitness center as well.
