Our Inspector's Highlights
• The Bernards Inn Restaurant is located in downtown Bernardsville, a tony bedroom community in the rolling hills of northern New Jersey’s horse country.

• The Bernards Inn Restaurant is divided into three distinct dining rooms. The Library Piano Bar, which is closest to lobby, is dark and masculine, with an octagonal mahogany bar and tables for two against large windows facing the street.

• The largest of the three dining spaces with 80 seats, The Great Room is decorated in soft green hues and offers a quieter, more romantic atmosphere. Its tucked-away tables are popular for birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions.

• The Conservatory, adjacent to the Library, is lighter and livelier in feel with a black and white checkerboard floor, white-painted woodwork and entertainers at the baby grand piano Wednesday through Saturday evenings.

• A large wine list curated by wine director, Terri Baldwin includes numerous selections by the glass, available in six- or nine-ounce pours. The roster of specialty cocktails also changes with the calendar, as does a line-up of craft beers on draft.
Things to Know
• Due to its location in one of the toniest areas of New Jersey, the inn and restaurant attract a well-heeled crowd. Most women are stylishly dressed and men tend to wear sports coats, with or without neckties.

• A local landmark, the property (which also includes The Bernards Inn, a luxury hotel) sits directly on the street adjacent to upscale boutiques, art galleries and restaurants, and is a short walk from the Bernardsville train station.

• Breakfast (Monday through Friday from 6:30 to 10 a.m. and Saturday from 8 to 10 a.m.), lunch (Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.) and dinner (Monday through Thursday from 5:30 to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday until 10:30 p.m.) are served at the Forbes Travel Guide Recommended restaurant in addition to a brunch (Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.) and three-course Sunday Supper (5:30 to 9 p.m.).
The Food
• The well-rounded seasonal dinner menu provides options for every diet. Carnivores will adore buffalo sirloin or surf and turf options, while vegetarians can enjoy dishes like braised organic red chief lentil stew.

• Breakfast offers simple, standard fare with slight seasonal twists—think steel-cut oatmeal with dried cranberries or brioche French toast with peach and ginger chutney.

• To truly try the best of the New Jersey’s bounty, opt for the seasonal tasting menu with wine pairings. Summer offerings might include chilled yellow tomato gazpacho, grilled octopus with quinoa salad and day boat scallops with lemon risotto.
