The Dining Room at Castle Hill Inn

Classic New England cuisine in Newport
VERIFIED LUXURY
The Dining Room at Castle Hill Inn offers a culinary experience unlike any other in Newport. Fare is served in various picturesque locations in and around Castle Hill Inn's grand 19th-century mansion: four intimate dining rooms within the main building itself, a breezy, sprawling lawn lined with relaxing Adirondack chairs, and an outside bar and terrace area overlooking lively Narragansett Bay.

The menus change with the seasons, embodying the farm-to-table philosophy as much as possible — in fact, The Dining Room serves many fresh vegetables grown in Castle Hill's own gardens.

The Newport restaurant welcomes patrons year-round for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch (breakfast and afternoon high tea are available exclusively for guests of the inn). The Dining Room at Castle Hill is the perfect place to enjoy skillfully crafted dishes made from the freshest seasonal ingredients, top-notch service, and unsurpassed panoramic ocean views.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • Inside The Dining Room, which is spread among four spaces in the mansion-like Castle Hill Inn, the scene is lively yet intimate. The rooms allow for easy conversation in a relaxed and sophisticated setting.
  • Outside on The Lawn and terrace, the atmosphere is a bit more casual, as guests enjoy oyster martinis (Crop tomato vodka, sambal-cilantro purée, Clamato and a Rhode Island oyster) and lighter picnic fare (steamed littleneck clams with housemade kielbasa in a smoked seaweed broth with chiles and crostini; or a lobster roll with tarragon-crème fraîche dressing) while lounging on the picture-perfect Adirondack chairs.
  • Set on a private 40-acre peninsula minutes away from downtown Newport, the beautifully maintained grounds of Castle Hill Inn overlook the breathtaking sights of Narragansett Bay. From the sailboats casually coasting by to the unobstructed views of the Newport Pell Bridge, guests of The Dining Room at Castle Hill are treated to a quintessential New England experience.
Things to Know
  • There are separate menus for dining inside and outside, both of which offer a fair share of gourmet seafood dishes. The menu for alfresco dining is a bit lighter and includes selections from the raw bar.
  • Breakfast at the Newport restaurant is reserved for inn guests only (the other meals are open to the public) from 8 to 10 a.m.
  • Lunch runs Monday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dinner is available Sunday through Thursday from 5:45 to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 5:45 to 10 p.m. Sunday brunch is served with live jazz from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • There's no precise dress code at The Dining Room at Castle Hill Inn per se, but when you're dining on an artfully designed three- or five-course seafood-centric dinner, you'll want to look the part: a chic dress or nice pants and a blouse for the ladies, and a suit jacket and dress pants for the men.
The Food
  • The entire dining experience of this coastal Rhode Island restaurant is catered towards the natural bounty of New England. Seafood like oysters and halibut are caught off the coast of nearby Aquidneck Island while the cheese selection is sourced from local farms.

  • The three-course prix fixe menu is simplistically elegant, offering a selection of delicious New England dishes such as lamb Wellington. Served with spinach and English peas, it is a perfect example of the understated skill this restaurant puts into its dishes.

  • The menu takes a more creative twist when it comes to desserts. Try the s’mores for a contemporary twist on a childhood favorite made up of dark chocolate crémeux and milk jam served with toasted marshmallow ice cream.
The Design
  • Much like its food, the environment at Castle Hill Inn centers around its coastal New England location. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer panoramic views of the chilly bay, making this the perfect spot to catch a sunset.

  • White tablecloths and comfortably cushioned dining chairs maintain a sense of traditional elegance without feeling too opulent.

  • Situated on the far wall, the large wooden Mansion Bar is an ideal place to stop in for a drink before sitting down for dinner or a nightcap before heading to bed.
