Flagstaff House Restaurant

Mountain cuisine with French flair
VERIFIED LUXURY
From its location on Flagstaff Mountain, Flagstaff House Restaurant is easily one of the most amazing spots to watch the sunset. And the food here rivals the setting. The upscale and inspired menu changes daily, with plates like Atlantic black bass with potato confit and sherry onion jam, and Cervena venison loin with Italian white polenta serving as highlights.

The wine list is massive so enlist the assistance of the attentive sommelier for guidance. If you can, arrive early and have a seat at the stunning mahogany bar for a pre-dinner cocktail.

Matching the menu and marvelous vistas is the sophisticated service. You’ll notice that most of the waitstaff is young, but they’re also knowledgeable. Ask your server for recommendations on food or wine, and they’ll have some for you.

You’ll most likely get tasty gifts from the chef throughout the course of your meal as well — maybe an amuse bouche, possibly a sorbet between courses, a pre-dessert and then some mignardises. Of course, everything will be a treat. And with the food, view and polished service working together, you’ll certainly return.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • The menu at Flagstaff House Restaurant features American cuisine that’s French-inspired.
  • The main dining room features large floor-to-ceilings windows on one side that usher in natural light as well as make the view of Boulder the main focal point. The ceilings are high with glass paneling between wooden beams, giving the fine dining spot more of a lodge-like feel.
Things to Know
  • The official dress code at Flagstaff House Restaurant is business causal. With its rich décor and sophisticated menu, the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star restaurant feels like one of those special occasion hotspots.
  • It’s not a drive for the weary. The restaurant is tucked into a mountain that overlooks Boulder and getting there is a bit of a trek, so if you’re scared of heights or just scared of driving up winding, narrow roads, you’ll want to plan ahead to either take a taxi or have someone who is comfortable driving in the dark.
  • A popular spot, you’ll want to make reservations to be sure you can get in when you want. Another thing to note — while all the dining room’s tables look out through the floor-to-ceiling windows, you might want to request a table for two nearest the windows for a first-class view.
  • It’s a family-run operation. Owned and operated by the Monette family, you’ll feel genuinely welcomed here.
The Food
  • Flagstaff House Restaurant has a pretty big menu, so you’ll have plenty of options that are reflective of the regional Rocky Mountains environment, including dishes from the land and water.
  • Appetizers included foie gras and sweetbreads; tuna tartare served with sake (which you can purchase for a supplemental fee); a tuna fish "sandwich" (carpaccio); quail; and vegetarian dishes as well.
  • Entrees consist of a good variety of fish and meat, including lobster, sole, scallops, prawns, pork cheeks, buffalo filet, filet mignon, duck, lamb and chicken.
