The Ring Hotel

Vienna's casually elegant city center stay
VERIFIED LUXURY

A modern city enveloped by its imperial past, Vienna proves that you can’t judge a book by its cover. This is especially true at elegant The Ring Hotel, where a regal facade conceals a contemporary-chic interior.

Boasting an air of casual luxury, the property features a café au lait color palette that seamlessly blends its modern features (a pop-art-lined restaurant, state-of-the-art gym) with its historical quirks. Take a ride in the 1860 building’s historic elevator to the elegant Ring Suite that still offers a peek at its original stucco walls and ceiling accented with a crystal chandelier.

The hotel’s ornate 19th-century exterior stands out along the Ringstrasse, Vienna’s historic main thoroughfare. Well situated just a stone’s throw from the opera and a short walk to the Musikverein concert hall, The Ring provides the a convenient perch from which to explore the Austrian capital.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • With only 68 rooms and suites, this Ringstrasse hotel feels more like a chic boutique than a bustling city center property.
  • Those who feel a bit fatigued by Vienna’s obsession with imperial-inspired furnishings — gold faucets and garish décor seem to be everywhere — will feel right at home in this contemporary spot. Wooden accents and pops of color are more en vogue here.
  • The Ring’s central location puts you within arm’s reach of the trendy cafés, restaurants and bars found in the First District, as well as the luxe boutiques of Kohlmarkt and Kärntner Strasse. Vienna’s historical sites are easily accessible, too, such as the State Opera house and the Hofburg Imperial Palace.
  • For a real sensory treat, book an evening massage in the day spa, followed by a visit to the steam room. A small window overlooks the nearby Karlskirche cathedral, which looks positively magical when illuminated.
  • Trendy design elements, casually cool bartenders and creative cocktails make the Drings Lounge a good spot for a pre-dinner sip or a nightcap.

Things to Know

  • If you don’t feel comfortable riding up to your room in a 150-year-old elevator, there is a modern lift available as well.
  • Those who can’t bear to leave their furry friends behind on their Vienna adventure don’t need to worry — The Ring Hotel is pet-friendly.
  • Be sure to ask the staff about the restaurant’s weekly wine dinners. Hosted every Friday, these signature events offer special meals paired with vintages from local vineyards.

The Rooms

  • The coffee-and-cream color scheme continues from the public spaces into the rooms, which also introduce pops of color in the curtains, pillows and décor. Some accommodations bear a pleasant olive hue, while some include a dusty terracotta.
  • What the standard rooms lack in space (less than 320 square feet), they make up for in luxe touches, like White Company bath products, Julius Meinl coffee machines and heated mirrors and flooring in the bathrooms.
  • If you need a little more space, but don't want to swing for a suite, the X-Ordinary Rooms provide more than 100 extra square feet, as well as walk-in closets, breakfast tables and a separate water closet (with a soft-closing seat to boot).
  • The most extravagant stay at this storied hotel can be found in the nearly 1,300-square-foot Ring Suite. Outfitted with a private balcony overlooking the Ringstrasse, a walk-in closet and a separate staff entrance, this sumptuous accommodation is fit for visiting royalty.

The Restaurants

  • Named for the hotel’s address (Kärntner Ring 8), Restaurant At Eight serves modern Viennese cuisine as envisioned by chef Roman Wurzer. The menu changes with the seasons, but is always served in a three- or four-course format with optional wine pairings.
  • Be sure to visit the restaurant if only to tour the in-house cellar. More than 770 bottles are stored in this stunning subterranean space, with tours and tastings offered upon request.
  • Though the food may be refined, this Vienna eatery doesn’t take itself too seriously. Large windows are set opposite a row of mirrors, creating a topsy-turvy effect with the traffic on Ringstrasse.
  • During the day, At Eight has a casual vibe, but come sundown, the white tablecloths, ornate lamps and candles make an appearance to create a romantic and intimate ambiance.
