MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa

Sonoma's lush historic hideaway
VERIFIED LUXURY
A former family estate and vineyard, Sonoma's MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa has been reinvented, but without sacrificing its Victorian charm. At this 150-year-old hideaway, luxury is in the details.

Nearly every aspect of the updated historic property is custom, and each amenity meticulously curated to nurture elegant comfort, well-being and freedom from stress.

The remodel of this former 19th-century working ranch embraces its original equestrian appeal and pays homage to the farmhouse aesthetic while surrounding you in modern splendor. Spread across 20 buildings, the 64 cozy rooms offer a peaceful retreat. Winding footpaths and lush gardens provide a park-like setting throughout the seven-plus-acre property.

Estates such as this — once common in Sonoma Valley — are a long-lost memory, yet MacArthur Place allows you to step into the bucolic past while enjoying posh and contemporary hospitality.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • The eateries are a standout. All-day coffee shop and marketplace The Porch is a brand-new addition featuring artisan eats and uncommon products from small businesses like Giddy Up Nuts, Rustic Bakery, Wooden Spoon Herbs, BeeKeepers Naturals, Jacobsen Salt Co. and Hu Chocolate. Sonoma County roaster Acre Coffee provides the java, and an expansive tea menu spotlights locally based Uppercase Tea. Layla brings upscale Mediterranean-inspired fare in a relaxed, elegant venue.
  • Each in-room Provisions Bar is stocked with complimentary items curated by science journalist Max Lugavere, author of the New York Times best-selling book Genius Foods: Become Smarter, Happier, and More Productive While Protecting Your Brain for Life. Mini-fridge beverages include protein drinks, coconut water and local brews.
  • Cult Parisian creative house Lola James Harper created a custom candle scent for the hotel — a juniper fragrance evoking the resort’s agrarian nature. Find a full collection of Lola James Harper candles in the lobby curio cabinets where additional artisan items for sale include fine leather goods by RTH and fragrances by Kerosene.
  • The complimentary plush green slippers in your room are like none other. Thick and cushy with outdoor soles, these slippers are sure to become an at-home favorite and a comfy reminder of your serene Sonoma getaway.
  • Meandering paths and verdant gardens filled abundantly with flowers, fountains and sitting areas beg for exploration.

Things to Know
  • The luxuriously rustic Barn serves as the social heart of the resort. Think of it as a gathering spot for food, wine, art and work — plush leather banquettes come with plenty of outlets.
  • Furthering the “no stress” mantra, MacArthur Place is a no-tip property.
  • Don’t miss out on the complimentary use of Blix electric bikes. They are a wonderful mode of transport for exploringquaint Sonoma Plaza and nearby wineries.
  • Complimentary local wines are served from 5 to 6 p.m. daily in the lobby. The resort enjoys great relationships with local wineries to which the concierge can arrange tours and tastings.
  • The Sonoma hotel offers two bespoke wine tasting experiences with Bohemian Highway Travel Co., available exclusively to MacArthur Place guests.

The Rooms
  • The 11different room types provide plenty of variety, with several spaces featuring private patios, wood-burning fireplaces and outdoor showers. Large sliding barn doors add a chic rustic touch.
  • The overscaled furniture in every room was custom made in a soothing color palette of warm creamy neutrals accented with taupe, pumpkin and black. Linen wallpaper provides texture, while ceilings with oversized plaid molding and leather valance-dressed windows add drama.
  • Bathrooms offer custom-designed millwork vanities in neutral limestone, and shower walls are lined in Walker Zanger Café collection tiles in a glossy milk finish.
  • Organic toiletries are supplied by Grown Alchemist of Australia, and amenities include Dyson hair dryers.
  • An in-room iPad lets you summon services from the on-demand concierge and guest services from the luxury hotel.
The Restaurants

  • The remodel includes three new culinary concepts overseen by executive chef Cole Dickinson, formerly of Napa Valley’s Acacia House.
  • Named for the great-granddaughter of the property’s founder, Layla is a bright and airy space serving up contemporary Mediterranean fare (such as halibut shakshuka and lamb tagine) for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The dining room’s design pays tribute to the original barn structure and boasts an open, communal vibe with terra-cotta, white and neutral tones.
  • The Bar at MacArthur Place is a sultry and sumptuous jewel-toned lounge crafting a curated selection of creative cocktails, beers and an all-day menu of traditional bar bites with a Mediterranean twist, like English pea hummus and Greek-style fries.
  • In addition to artisan coffee and tea, The Porch carries a variety of fresh grab-and-go options, including gluten-free treats and all-day breakfast.
