Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore

An original that still awes
VERIFIED LUXURY
Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore lays claim to being the original paradise — debuting in 1971, it was the first of the Shangri-La brand. Its timeless, sophisticated vibe resonates throughout, from the grand dual lobbies to bougainvillea-filled balconies.

Near popular Orchard Road amid 15 green acres, the expansive hotel offers 750 rooms in three wings, each with its own vibe: The Valley Wing is all about top-of-the-line luxury, Tower Wing has a more contemporary feel and Garden Wing offers nature-inspired rooms.

No matter which wing you choose, you can take advantage of the hotel’s CHI, The Spa at Shangri-La — the brand’s first outpost in Singapore — five restaurants, two bars and a pastry shop. It’s our idea of Shangri-La.

  • Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore is located on a sprawling property just off Singapore’s famous Orchard Road — it serves as a prime spot for visitors who are looking to take advantage of all the city has to offer.
  • Near the glitz and glamour of Orchard Road’s shopping district, the hotel is situated in a prime spot for shopping and dining and is centrally located near other attractions such as the Singapore Botanic Gardens.
  • You’ll be greeted by an impeccably dressed and poised staff: bellman wear traditional red Asian uniforms with red pill-box hats, doormen wear ornate black hats with feathers on top, and female staff members don long traditional Chinese dresses.
  • The lagoon-like pool, surrounded by gardens and lush foliage, is a picturesque place to play under the sun. It’s large enough to spread out from other pool-goers and has a stocked snack bar where you can order refreshments.
Things to Know
  • While it’s located downtown, the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star hotel feels secluded and is surrounded by 15 acres of lush tropical gardens.
  • It’s located on a hill set off from busy streets. If you’re planning on walking rather than driving in Singapore, know that when you leave the main entrance you’ll have to follow a narrow walkway with stairs leading down to the street level. It’s not a long hike but it’s steep.
  • It’s a kid-friendly place: The hotel is large and offers various accommodations and dining venues that are child-friendly. The huge resort pool is a big draw for kids, as is the hotel’s babysitting services for adults.
The Rooms

These rooms are the most posh of the bunch, oversized with elegant, timeless décor. Expect LCD TVs in bathrooms and private butler service for those in suites.
  • The Tower Wing has contemporary, comfortable rooms clad in warm colors. Each has a floor-to-ceiling view of either the city or the gorgeous pool; amenities include full-sized writing desks and marble bathrooms.
  • If you love to be near nature, then the Garden Wing is for you. The newly refurbished rooms are inspired by the great outdoors and feature wood floors and private balconies that overlook the hotel’s gardens.
