Rumor even has it that the character of Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind was based on Samuel Hamilton, the house's original owner and city's mayor, business owner, blockade runner and all-around ostentatious man.

Our Inspector's Highlights
- Hamilton-Turner sits on one of Savannah’s 22 beautiful squares, Lafayette Square. It faces the area’s most recognizable church, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and is also next door to the childhood home of author Flannery O’Connor.
- Complimentary breakfast is served in the adjacent dining area, where an open kitchen produces daily specials that range from vegetable frittatas to fruit pancakes.
- Waiting for you on the desktop in every room is a box of chocolate-peanut brittle, along with views of Lafayette Square or the private courtyard.
- If you’re coming for St. Patrick’s Day — the city hosts one of the largest parades in the country — you will have a front-row view from the inn, which sits along the route.
- The excellent location of Hamilton-Turner Inn means you’re just beyond the more heavily foot-trafficked areas of Savannah, such as the nearby Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and Colonial Cemetery, yet only about four blocks from popular River Street.
Things to Know
- The Savannah hotel does not serve lunch or dinner. However, within walking distance are several excellent restaurants, such as Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room — a can’t-miss lunch spot — and The Public Kitchen and Bar, a popular eatery owned by the same folks behind one of the city’s most upscale restaurants, Local11ten.
- Cooler months are a great time to visit because the entire city is walkable, even though the Savannah hotel sits away from the busiest roads.
- While Savannah is a great retreat for the whole family, the inn does not allow children under 10.
The Rooms
- The rooms at Hamilton-Turner feel like someone’s exquisite bedroom. Each is individually decorated with a mix of original antiques and reproductions, all coming together to create a charmingly Southern space.
- Suites and rooms capture the charm of the South while offering modern touches such as high-speed Internet access and flat-screen TVs. Fireplaces in some suites set the mood for a romantic getaway.
- Opt to stay in the main house upstairs in suites or rooms, or on the garden level, where each guest room is dog friendly, has direct courtyard access and features exposed brick.
- For more space, the three-bedroom carriage house can be rented privately or by the individual room.
The Look
- Hamilton-Turner Inn was built in 1873 as a residence, and the exterior design was modeled after the Second French Empire architecture popular between 1865 and 1880. Some people have gone as far to say that it looks like Disney’s famous Haunted Mansion.
- Inside, the old yet meticulously restored Southern home comes alive, thanks to original antiques and independently decorated rooms adorned as they would have been 140 years ago — muted, rich colors and plenty of patterns.
- A cozy dining room and adjacent parlor provide communal spaces exactly where original owner Samuel Hamilton would have entertained his wealthy guests.
- Large ornate rugs cover much of the hardwood floors, and some of the original bed frames are still in use.
