The Duniway Portland, A Hilton Hotel

Portland’s vibrant downtown stay
VERIFIED LUXURY

The Duniway Portland, A Hilton Hotel immerses you in urban surroundings. With the nature-inspired stained-glass art installation in the lobby, the exclusive secret garden tucked away on the 11th floor and the widespread reclaimed wood, you will instantly feel a link to the Pacific Northwest — The Duniway is even named after pioneering Oregon suffragist and writer Abigail Scott Duniway.

But in keeping with Portland’s aim to be just a little bit different, the property features artistic touches at every opportunity, including the front desk team proudly displaying tattoos, quirky figurines perched in lobby bookcases and a U-Turn turntable spinning staff-selected vinyl by the check-in desk.

Walk into this downtown retreat to find top-notch dining, friendly staff, comfortable and luxurious accommodations and a true appreciation of place.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The Duniway’s Vinyl Suite (opening in early 2019) will be a music lover’s heaven. Wall-to-wall bookshelves will house records of all genres, and the room’s own turntable lets you play DJ, all in the comfort of your ultra-plush accommodation.
  • Take the elevator up to the 11th floor, walk past the gym and exit out onto a peaceful rooftop courtyard reserved exclusively for guests. Nicknamed Abigail’s Hideaway after the property’s namesake, the courtyard boasts fire pits and strings of tea lights amid comfortable seating and thoughtful landscaping.
  • Though pools are rare in downtown, the luxury hotel has a family-friendly swimming hole on the 11th floor attached to the private courtyard.
  • The Duniway’s art and décor is incredibly curated. Stop off on the different floors to check out the beautiful photography, appreciate the refined wood “wave ceiling” while swimming laps in the indoor pool, or browse the shelves in the lobby to find artistic references to the hotel’s owner, restaurant (rabbits in a nod to Jackrabbit), and the city.
  • Fans of Top Chef Masters will remember season four winner, Chris Cosentino, who just so happens to helm the kitchen of the hotel’s Jackrabbit restaurant. Stop by any time of day to savor some of Portland’s best flavors.

Things to Know

  • For the best vistas, book into one of the hip hotel’s City View High Floor rooms on levels 16 through 19.
  • After a busy day of sightseeing, retreat to The Duniway’s lounge, where you can play games, peruse the volumes on the bookshelf-lined walls and take part in some complimentary wine tasting.
  • Parking can be challenging with one-way streets dominating the downtown core, so if you are driving to The Duniway, take advantage of the valet service to save yourself the hassle. Bonus: you can enter and exit as desired.
  • Make plans to stay at this urban retreat during the holidays. Not only is downtown Portland decked out in Christmas cheer, but The Duniway features festive live music in the lounge and offers a gift-wrapping station so you can ship your purchases back home in seasonal style.

The Rooms

  • The Duniway’s 327 spacious accommodations present a variety of options. Ask for a room overlooking bustling Sixth Avenue for a taste of the activity outside, or for a more serene vista, request one with a courtyard view.
  • Business-minded visitors will be pleased to find modern desks in each guest room. Set up with easily accessible outlets and swivel chairs, the sleek work spaces offer a separate place to check emails or stack up all your purchases from recent shopping trips.
  • Guest rooms throughout the Portland hotel come equipped with Capino coffee makers. Peruse the curated snack sets that appeal to different travelers: Crunchy Portland feeds healthy types with Poplandia popcorn, Rain City Crunch granola and Oregon Rain water, while Rosé All Daytoasts aficionados of the pink wine with a can of local Underwood, rose-colored glasses and a copy of Rosé All Dayby James Beard Award winner Katherine Cole.
  • Don’t fret if you didn’t come prepared for Portland’s rainy days — each accommodation provides not one but two umbrellas for your use.
  • Waldorf Astoria bedding and striking marble countertops in the bathroom add luxe touches in the comfortable accommodations.

The Restaurants

  • Recognized by the American Institute of Architects for its sustainably focused design, Jackrabbit’s spatial layout and décor is thoughtful and intriguing. From repurposed bicycle chandeliers and a wall covered in leather belts to a dual-sided bar and two large tables hewn from one impressive log, the restaurant is a visual masterpiece — modern and authentic at the same time.
  • The dishes at Jackrabbit live up to chef Cosentino’s reputation. Known for using every part of the animal and minimizing food waste, the toque turns out highlights such as pig ears and a delicious bone marrow dip that accompanies the steak entrée, but don’t skip the extensive raw bar and tasty oysters, either
  • Be sure to save room for dessert, where options might include a floral lemon and chamomile crème brûlée or a dark chocolate tartlet served with salted foie gras caramel.
  • Pull up a stool at Jackrabbit’s bar to sample the gin-centric craft cocktails built on a base of 60 herbaceous spirits from around the globe. A wide selection of Pacific Northwest wines rounds out the menu.
