Hotel Lucia
A chic historic boutique
VERIFIED LUXURY
We verify luxury. Our highly trained inspectors visit every property we rate, evaluating based on up to 900 objective criteria. Our hotel stays span a minimum of two nights.
We pay our own way. No one can buy a rating; all ratings are earned through our objective inspection process.
Our global team of inspectors are anonymous at all times, so they have the same experience as a typical guest.
While we inspect both service and facility, our Star Rating system emphasizes service because your experience at a hotel, restaurant or spa goes beyond looks — how it makes you feel is what you will remember most.
We started in1958 as Mobil Travel Guide, and we created the original Five-Star rating system for hospitality.
Five-Star
These are outstanding, often iconic properties with virtually flawless service and amazing facilities.
Four-Star
These are exceptional properties, offering high levels of service and quality of facility to match.
Recommended
These are excellent properties with consistently good service and facilities.
Soon To Be Rated
As our highly trained, incognito inspectors work to assess properties, our editors check them out ahead of time and provide a sneak preview of what to expect.
Hotel Lucia is a premier boutique hotel in downtown Portland with a gallery-like lobby and atrium, attentive staff, thoughtfully appointed rooms and prime location for exploring the city. From the moment you step through the front doors of this historic hotel building, you’re surrounded by chic elegance rooted in the hundreds of black-and-white prints by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer David Hume Kennerly. The prints, which include portraits of U.S. presidents and Hollywood stars, keep you company in many of the hotel’s spaces, as does the smart, stylish decor that melds the Golden Age of Hollywood with a clean, contemporary style.
Grab a meal at Imperial, the hotel’s signature restaurant, where popular Portland chef Vitaly Paley makes use of ingredients and materials from the Pacific Northwest for dishes such as duck meatballs, twice-baked bone marrow and spiced Oregon albacore tuna.

Our Inspector's Highlights
- Hotel Lucia is located in downtown Portland, within short walking distance of everything from Powell’s Books (the largest independent bookstore in the world) and the art galleries in the Pearl District to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, farmers markets, and fine dining.
- The hotel is less than a 10-minute walk from Waterfront Park, where you can bike the paths, walk along the waterfront, check out the statues and public art and get out in the fresh Portland air.
- As you step foot in the lobby lounge, you’ll be greeted by sleek leather armchairs that rest alongside minimalist floral arrangements and a roaring fire, while in the lobby atrium, gallery lighting emphasizes a collection of photography and contemporary sculpture.
Things to Know
- Portland is a vibrant city year-round, and Hotel Lucia provides easy access to its many attractions, from arts performances and galleries to the innovative restaurants that have made the city such a high-profile culinary destination.
- During the summer months — the most popular time of year to visit the upscale property — visitors flock to the city for waterfront festivals, blooming rose gardens and sunshine.
- Keep in mind that peak season means higher room rates and occupancy, so if you’re dead-set on a trip during the summer months, we recommend you book well in advance to claim your room at the hotel.
The Rooms
- Renovated in 2014, each of the 127 rooms and suites at Hotel Lucia was thoughtfully designed in a clean, warm contemporary style, with luxurious pillow-top mattresses, 100 percent Egyptian cotton bedding by Mascioni and sleek bathrooms.
- Rosewood furniture meets textiles in shades of gray and blue, as well as crisp white duvets and linens. Citrine-colored draperies and orange throw pillows provide pops of color.
- Every room at the upscale hotel comes with a pillow menu — because quite frankly, why not — along with a Bluetooth-enabled iHome docking station and a large, wall-mounted Samsung HD TV.
- Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer David Hume Kennerly’s photos grace the walls of many rooms, which means you can enjoy the company of Seinfeld stars, Jodie Foster, and former presidents during your stay.
The Restaurants
- Adjacent to Hotel Lucia’s lobby is one of the city’s hottest new restaurants: Imperial.
- Owned by Vitaly Paley, a legendary Portland chef, the restaurant serves a menu of new American cuisine, much of which is prepared in the huge roaring wood-fired grill that anchors the open kitchen.
- Choose from dishes such as salt-roasted spot prawns, duck meatballs, steak with chanterelles, roasted carrots with wild plum glaze and sticky toffee gingerbread with baked pears.
- In case you’d rather stick to the confines of your room, a limited menu is available for in-room service at the Forbes Travel Guide Recommended hotel, as are five delicious flavors of locally-made Salt & Straw ice cream.
