Canoe Bay

Northwestern Wisconsin's wooded wonderland
VERIFIED LUXURY
Situated on 300 acres in northwestern Wisconsin, this secluded adults-only hideaway is the perfect place to escape from the stress of everyday life. Comprising 27 guest accommodations in some 20 structures, each room and cottage is designed for just two adults, offering incredible privacy for comfort and relaxation.

The resort’s three private, spring-fed lakes offer a multitude of recreational opportunities. The wilderness trails are ideal for hiking in summer months, while snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are popular during the winter.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • Canoe Bay’s dining room features a 3-course dinner that changes nightly based on what’s in season. Many of the featured ingredients were grown on the property in the Canoe Bay Gardens, which can be toured prior to dining.
  • The Lodge is the perfect place to unplug and unwind with high lofted ceilings, large fireplaces, overstuffed leather armchairs, lakeside deck and thousands of books available in the library.
  • A continental breakfast is not only included in the room rate, it also gets hand delivered to your door every morning.
  • All accommodations are geared towards couples, making for the perfect romantic getaway.
Things to Know
  • Canoe Bay does not allow kids, pets, or smoking.
  • No need to carry cash for tipping. In lieu of gratuities, the resort simply adds a 20% food and beverage service charge to your tab and the staff don’t accept tips.
  • One of your most private choices for accommodations is an ESCAPE tiny house. At just 400 square feet, the house features a fireplace, screened-in porch, stand-up shower with heated tile floor and, of course, beautiful lake views.
  • During the winter, the resort will lend you complimentary snowshoes to explore the more than 300-acre property after a fresh snowfall.
  • While free Wi-Fi is available, it is very limited and only available in certain public areas.
The Rooms
  • There are 12 different choices for accommodations, but all are at least fairly private and offer views of the lake and prairie.
  • Standard features in every room and cottage include a king bed, fireplace, private deck, two-person whirlpool tub, flat-screen TV with DVD player and mini-fridge.
  • The only two-bedroom accommodation is the Edgewood Villa, but it is definitely worth the splurge, featuring vaulted ceilings, 50 continuous feet of windows, TV system with surround sound and a 1,500 square foot wraparound deck that is accessible from each room.
  •  All rooms feature wooden walls, exposed wooden beams, and stone fireplaces, giving the space a cozy, romantic feel no matter where you stay.
Nearby Attractions
  • During the summer, the lake is the main source of entertainment, offering canoeing, kayaking and swimming, with hiking and biking available on the miles of trails surrounding the property.
  • In the winter, you can find 20 miles of cross-country ski trails in the Blue Hills, just a 25-minute drive away. Downhill skiing can also be enjoyed at Christie Mountain, also just 25 minutes away.
  • If golf is more your style, you can find two courses just 20 minutes away—9-hole Sioux Creek or 18-hole Turtleback.
  • For a more aquatic afternoon, head up to the Chetek Chain of Lakes, about 15 minutes from Canoe Bay for a fishing excursion with the resort’s recommended fishing guide.
