Excelsior Hotel Gallia, A Luxury Collection Hotel

A revitalized art deco grand dame in Milan
VERIFIED LUXURY
Excelsior Hotel Gallia, A Luxury Collection Hotel is an art deco landmark and a chic beacon for Milan’s latest “it” neighborhood, Porta Nuova.

Recently renovated with a nod to the decadence of the Jazz Age, its gorgeous design and tech-forward accommodations bring Gatsby into the 21st century.

Part of the Luxury Collection group, the 1932 hotel is now composed of the original building and a connected, new glass-and-steel tower — the combination of old and new is all thoroughly modern Milan at its finest.

Perhaps a less flashy perk but useful nonetheless, the hotel’s location across the street from the city’s central train station makes it convenient for business travelers.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • The ground level is a collection of beautifully designed meeting areas showing off star Italian designers with pieces by B&B Italia, Cassina, Fendi Casa and Flos, plus more than 500 works of art by modern and contemporary artists.
  • The almost 11,000-square-foot Shiseido Spa Milan and fitness center reside on the hotel’s top two floors, where customized workouts, relaxing treatments and daily swims can almost, but not quite, be passed over for a round of virtual golf.
  • A hidden cigar bar on the lobby level adds a touch of mystique to this historic hotel.
  • Need a drink? Take in the view of Milan’s Stazione Central, the grand early 20th-century train station, and grab a cocktail at the panoramic mixology bar.
  • The Milan hotel brought in the celebrated Cerea Brothers to oversee Terrazza Gallia, the new rooftop restaurant, serving up modern Italian fare in style—this gorgeous spot was furnished by Fendi Outdoor, Knoll and Varaschin.

The Rooms
  • There’s no doubt about it — Excelsior Gallia is bold, even bombastic at times. Its 235 rooms and 53 suites are all about smart style through a fusion of intrepid design and technology.
  • Each room has beautiful clean lines, light neutral hues and handpicked furnishings from Italy’s top designers.
  • The five Design Suites are inspired by the Italian greats — architects Gìo Ponti, Achille Castiglioni, Vico Magistretti, Luigi Caccia Dominioni and Franco Albini — bringing in elements from each.
  • The rooftop Katara Suite is a celebration of luxury across nearly 11,000 square feet that includes four bedrooms, a private spa, its own screening room and two terraces.
The Restaurants
  • Perched on Excelsior Gallia's seventh floor, Terazza Gallia is the hotel's distinctive rooftop restaurant and bar. The dynamic dining room is helmed by chefs (and brothers) Vincenzo and Antonio Lebano under the guidance of the acclaimed Cerea family, resulting in a masterful blend of traditional Italian recipes with modern flair, all paired with exquisite Italian wine, of course.
  • Two signature tasting menus (featuring dishes like bouillabaisse soup with Kombu seaweed and sea truffle, lamb in Mediterranean barbecue sauce, and tomato ice cream with caramel mousse ) highlight the brothers’ talents, but an a la carte option is equally as appetizing.
  • Ground-floor Gallia Restaurant serves breakfast via a live cooking station; and the Gallia Lounge & Bar is the perfect spot to snag a traditional Italian coffee (or is it espresso you want?).
  • Head to The Cigar Lounge for an intimate space where you can indulge in fine cigars and top-shelf liquors.
