The Upper House

A modern Hong Kong haven
VERIFIED LUXURY
Opened in October 2009, the boutique hotel The Upper House, sister to Beijing’s trendy Opposite House hotel, occupies the top floors of a Pacific Place tower (thus, the name).

The look and feel of The Upper House is more residential than standard-issue hotel, with creamy, neutral tones, sleek, modernist furnishings and sizable studios stocked with high tech toys (iTouch iPods loaded with music and hotel information, LCD TVs, wine fridges, espresso machines).

Famed chef Gray Kunz’s Cafe Gray Deluxe serves updated classics (think gourmet burgers and other comfort fare), while the bar and lounge delivers potent cocktails and incredible views.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • This Four-Star hotel is in a prime location in the Admiralty neighborhood, an extension of Hong Kong’s bustling business district and home to Pacific Place, a shopper’s paradise that is home to boutiques from luxury retailers like Burberry, Gucci and Louis Vuitton.
  • An extensive collection of artwork graces the hotel’s 10-story atrium as well as the rooms at the Hong Kong hotel. The pieces were curated by the property’s designer, Andre Fu.
  • Gourmet European fare and stunning harbor views can be had at Café Gray, the 49th floor restaurant at The Upper House.
  • With all rooms at least 38 stories above the streets of Hong Kong, every accommodation comes with a view.
  • For drinks with a view, head to the Sky Lounge on the 49th floor, where you’ll find a fireplace, furniture accented in soft greens and blues, and killer vistas.
Things to Know
  • Feeling peckish? The room’s fully stocked “Maxi” bars are complimentary, all but the wine and champagne, of course.
  • Yogis will enjoy the complimentary morning sessions that take place on The Lawn every Saturday and Sunday.
  • Zip around town on one of the hotel’s complimentary bikes. There are only two, so be sure to reserve yours with the concierge.
The Rooms
  • The studio-style rooms at this Hong Kong hotel are incredibly spacious ranging in size from 730 square feet for the basic accommodations to 1,950 square feet for the palatial Penthouses.
  • Techie amenities abound in these luxurious accommodations. Enjoy a 42-inch LCD TV with surround sound, a duel temperature wine fridge, espresso machines and complimentary Wi-Fi.
  • Spa-inspired bathrooms offer standing rain showers, limestone-clad soaking tubs and separate dressing areas.
The Restaurants
  • Café Gray, the restaurant at The Upper House, is named after chef and partner Gray Kunz. Located on The Upper House’s 49th floor, the dining room specializes in using local organic produce for its unique cuisine — a fusion of European, Asian and American flavors.
  • Enjoy fare like papaya-mango salad with lime juice and brown sugar for breakfast, roast turkey roulade with glazed cranberries for lunch, grilled Spanish mackerel and octopus for Sunday brunch, and for dinner, grilled tiger prawns and pomelo salad.
  • One of the largest bars in Asia, the Café Gray Bar serves up an array of specialty cocktails (like a pineapple and thyme martini) and delicious bar bites such as fish and chips, a pastrami sandwich, polenta fries and foie gras bruschetta.
