The Pottinger, Hong Kong
A boutique beauty with Chinese charm
VERIFIED LUXURY
We verify luxury. Our highly trained inspectors visit every property we rate, evaluating based on up to 900 objective criteria. Our hotel stays span a minimum of two nights.
We pay our own way. No one can buy a rating; all ratings are earned through our objective inspection process.
Our global team of inspectors are anonymous at all times, so they have the same experience as a typical guest.
While we inspect both service and facility, our Star Rating system emphasizes service because your experience at a hotel, restaurant or spa goes beyond looks — how it makes you feel is what you will remember most.
We started in1958 as Mobil Travel Guide, and we created the original Five-Star rating system for hospitality.
Five-Star
These are outstanding, often iconic properties with virtually flawless service and amazing facilities.
Four-Star
These are exceptional properties, offering high levels of service and quality of facility to match.
Recommended
These are excellent properties with consistently good service and facilities.

As our highly trained, incognito inspectors work to assess properties, our editors check them out ahead of time and provide a sneak preview of what to expect.
A beautiful boutique address located in the middle of the vibrant Central district of the city, The Pottinger Hong Kong opened in 2014 but still manages to exude an atmosphere that oozes long-held heritage.
The hotel pays tribute to history in its artwork, Chinese-accented decor and location — aptly situated on Stanley Street, next to the iconic Pottinger Street stone stairwell. Several eateries and a sexy cocktail lounge make this a high style, full-service hot spot.

Our Inspector's Highlights
- An all-glass entryway opens into a hushed lobby with high ceilings and a soft, sophisticated vibe. Hand-painted silk wallpaper lends an ancient Chinese feel, while shades of pink, gray and silver add an air of modernity.
- One of the most appealing aspects of The Pottinger is its clutch of excellent restaurants from contemporary Italian dishes to French and Japanese fine-dining and eclectic cocktails.
- Central is a neighborhood rife with shopping, cultural sites, entertainment and dining options — you won’t long for things to do and see and eat in this historical-but-modern part of Hong Kong.
- In addition to local artwork, the luxury hotel also prides itself on offering authentic Hong Kong details such as latticed windowpanes and Chinese antiques.
Things to Know
- Throughout its corridors, the Hong Kong hotel displays the work of celebrated local photographer Fan Ho, who captured evocative black-and-white images of the city in the 1950s.
- Request a room on a higher floor for the best cityscape vistas.
- Though The Pottinger itself does not have a spa or gym, the location could not be more convenient for either. Just down the street in the L. Place building, there are about a half-dozen foot massage spas.
The Rooms
- The lobby’s pastel palette extends to the bedrooms, where pale print headboards adorned with birds and flowers remind one of Chinese silk screens.
- Designed to resemble a Chinese residence, the rooms have a small couch or seating area as well as several local touches, such as almond cookies and local books placed about the space.
- The rooms do feature a few tech-savvy touches: a 42-inch TV, a Nespresso machine and a smartphone with free local data and international calling to selected countries.
- The bathrooms are a highlight, outfitted with large walk-in rain showers, white marble and eye-catching lacquered amenities containers.
The Restaurants
- On the ground floor, Gradini Ristorante E Bar Italiano offers a peaceful place to relax, while enjoying contemporary Italian dishes.
- The Envoy bar and lounge has both a welcoming outdoor terrace and a dark, eclectic interior space. The menu focuses on high-concept cocktails — like the Picnic Spritz, which comprises cucumber-infused gin, house-made rosehip and hibiscus tea cordial — and bar bites.
- The crown jewel of The Pottinger is Ta Vie, an elegant French and Japanese fine-dining restaurant that specializes in Asian alcohol, such as Grace wines from China and Hibiki whiskey from Japan.
- There’s just one exquisite tasting menu per night at Ta Vie, compliments of noted chef Hideaki Sato. The contemporary black-and-white interiors feature intimate booths and private dining rooms for a relaxing and romantic experience.
