Rosedon Hotel

An Old World retreat with island flair
VERIFIED LUXURY

It’s hard to believe you’re only a five-minute walk from Bermuda’s capital city, Hamilton, when you step into the elegant oasis of Rosedon Hotel. The lush surroundings include tropical gardens with immense birds of paradise, blue passion and pink hibiscus flowers, and breezy patios canopied by palm fronds that shield the property from the street.

But the pièce de résistance is the wedding-cake-like main house, clad in white and bedecked with bright blue shutters and awnings. The mansion, which was built in 1906 and renovated in 2019, has been in the Kitson family for three generations. The owners’ loving attention to detail is evident in everything from the interiors to the food.

With such elegant service and refined rooms, it would be easy to think you’ve landed at an English country manor — that is, if it weren’t for that warm breeze blowing off the ocean.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Rosedon Hotel is a welcome respite from Bermuda’s sprawling resorts. With only 40 rooms, it is a boutique property where it seems every staff member knows your name and treats you like family.
  • While the luxury hotel certainly exudes old-school European charm, there are eclectic modern touches. To wit: large crystals are placed in each room to provide positive energy, harness healing and increase vibrational frequency, which is thought to improve your mood.
  • A two-year facelift renovated everything from the building’s infrastructure (new pipes and electrical wiring were installed) to the grounds, which saw the front lawns transformed into what the hotel refers to as “outdoor living rooms.”
  • Even in cooler temperatures, the serene heated pool in the back of the property is ideal for a dip. Don’t miss the cheeky animal fountain — the duo of stone ducks was named Donald and Daisy by a previous guest.
  • Skip your afternoon snack and make a beeline for the Bermuda hotel’s complimentary high tea, which features Harney & Sons brews, tiny tea sandwiches and freshly baked scones with clotted cream and strawberry preserves.

Things to Know

  • While Rosedon Hotel is not within walking distance of the beach, it offers a complimentary shuttle to the famed pink sands of Elbow Beach. You even can order a picnic lunch to bring with you from the property’s Huckleberry restaurant.
  • If you’d like to drive yourself around, the luxury hotel can arrange for an electric Renault Twizy car, a two-seat, open-sided vehicle that can travel more than 50 miles on a single charge. The property also has a fleet of new bikes for those looking for a more leisurely pace.
  • There is no gym onsite, but Rosedon has a partnership with next-door Tone Zone, which is open 24 hours a day and offers sleek Technogym equipment.

The Rooms

  • Each of the 40 rooms was designed by artist Lee K. Petty, the Bermuda hotel’s co-owner and creative director. The vibe is distinctly stately, with ornate wooden furniture and sumptuous fabrics printed with tropical themes.
  • There are five room categories ranging from Standard accommodations that overlook the tropical gardens and pool, to the singular Royal Quad, which boasts two queen beds and a massive private patio.
  • The enlightened hotel is also committed to sustainable practices: there are eco-friendly toiletries stocked in the bathroom and the rooms are cleaned only with non-toxic and biodegradable products.

The Restaurants

  • The boutique hotel is rightfully proud of its buzzed-about restaurant Huckleberry, which was named in honor of frequent Bermuda visitor Mark Twain. Chef Matthew Weber takes inspiration from the author’s Southern roots, adding island flair and global flavors to the eatery’s colorful plates.
  • Rosedon has an onsite garden that grows vegetables, herbs, fruits and edible flowers that Weber incorporates into many of his dishes.
  • Of course, seafood is a standout at Huckleberry. Opt for dishes like pan-seared octopus with cucumber and daikon slaw, sautéed shrimp with saffron and black bean rice, or a citrusy Huckleberry Salad (shredded cabbage, kale, avocado, oranges, cilantro and sesame-ginger dressing) topped with fresh-caught wahoo or rockfish.
  • The wine program is also noteworthy, especially for its curated selection of sustainable, organic and biodynamic labels. In fact, every single bottle in its collection bears the USDA-organic seal.
