Malliouhana, Auberge Resorts Collection

A tropical-chic Caribbean escape
VERIFIED LUXURY

Malliouhana, Auberge Resorts Collection is a new iteration of one of Anguilla’s original luxury properties. This whitewashed boutique stay merges modern indulgence with the stunning visual elements of the Caribbean.

The classic hotel originally built in the 1980s now boasts updated luxuries such as flat-screen televisions discreetly concealed in the foot of chic beds. Each room utilizes the tints and textures of the islands with tropical fabrics and rich color palettes. The name “Malliouhana” is derived from the Amerindian moniker for the island of Anguilla, giving a nod to the rich history of the exclusive northernmost Leeward island.

Sprawled on a cliff overlooking Turtle Cove and the shores of pristine Meads Bay, this collection of villas and rooms is in a prime location for the ultimate Anguilla experience. You’ll be glued to the hotel grounds, which have three restaurants, two pools, a spa and endless sunshine on the white sand bay.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Malliouhana was transformed in 2014 by renowned designer Todd Avery Lenahan with vintage décor and architecture paying homage to the property’s original form (the hotel was restored to this look after the 2017 hurricanes). Much of the art in the lobby and bar areas are original pieces curated by the hotel’s first owner.
  • Enjoy rest and relaxation on a whole new level with complimentary daily yoga overlooking the exclusive Turtle Cove beach.
  • The Caribbean hotel incorporated local remedies into as many spa elements as possible, like a post-tanning aloe treatment from succulents grown on property. Note that while the newly enhanced spa won’t officially reopen until November 1, services are still available in room or in a single spa suite.
  • You will want to spend your entire stay in the water. The hard part is choosing between the turquoise waves in Meads Bay or the pair of tiered pools overlooking the bay. Partake in nonmotorized watersports such as kayaking, paddleboarding or Sunfish sailing.
  • Every visage at Malliouhana is artistically appealing, from the ceiling-high display of vintage scuba masks in the lobby to the black-and-white-striped cabana lounges near the pool. But the water vistas steal the show.

Things to Know

  • Shop onsite at Bluu boutique and select from a handpicked collection of handicrafts, jewelry and resort wear.
  • High season in Anguilla is December to mid-April, so you should book in advance if you are looking to spend the festive period at this luxury hotel.
  • Because of its ideal location on Meads Bay, Malliouhana is just a short walk away from many of the best restaurants on Anguilla.
  • While Garden View Deluxe Rooms don’t have the ocean vistas of other choice accommodations, they are much more centrally located on the expansive property, which allows quicker access to the pool, Bar Soleil and Café Celeste.
  • Borrow a complimentary bicycle to explore more of the scenic island.

The Rooms

  • Malliouhana has stunning views of the cerulean horizon, white sand beach or tropical gardens from almost every terrace. You can’t go wrong with any of the beachfront, ocean-view or garden-view accommodations.
  • There is immense attention to detail in the décor of the rooms at the Anguilla hotel. Each space emits a Caribbean feel, from the coral-inspired bedside lamps to the signature emblem from the country’s flag in the doorway.
  • Garden View Deluxe Rooms have more than 800 square feet of living space and outdoor showers with open ceilings so you can wash under the stars.
  • Each room has a king-sized four-poster bed outfitted with luxurious down bedding and 100 percent cotton linens.
  • For the most extravagant island vacation experience, reserve the beachfront Kishti Villa on Turtle Cove. The 18,000-square-foot sanctuary comes with its own garden patio, infinity pool, home theater and indoor/outdoor living space.

The Restaurants

  • The luxury hotel recently opened Leon’s Porch and Beach Bar, named after the original owner of the resort. Located on the pristine mile-long Meads Bay, the casual eatery offers tasty beach food (don’t miss the johnnycakes) and fun, vibrant cocktails from midday to sunset.
  • Run by executive chef Jusman So, Café Celeste melds dishes of Mediterranean flair with Caribbean classics. Stop by for breakfast and a passion fruit Bellini or head here for dinner to savor local crayfish risotto and 16-hour roasted short ribs.
  • More casual bites can be found at Bar Soleil, where you can lounge in pool-side cabanas while noshing on ahi tuna poke or jerk chicken club sandwiches. Washing it all down with a rum cocktail is highly recommended.
